The Cruisers Aquatics Club has actively promoted swimming and related sports on the North Shore since 1971. The club is a non-profit organization that is a member of the British Columbia Summer Swimming Association (BCSSA). Our season begins May 1st and ends with the Provincial Championships in mid-August. Our purpose is to provide training and competition in an environment that encourages fun, sportsmanship, team spirit, and achieving your personal best. There are approximately 200 members between the ages of 5 and 18. Children as well as parents are sure to develop friendships, have lots of fun, and create lasting lifelong memories. Cruisers offers training and coaching in Speed Swimming, Synchronized Swimming, Water Polo and Diving, as well as a variety of social activities and a winter conditioning program. Speed swimmers practice in groups where they focus on refining their competitive strokes, starts, and turns. Emphasis is placed on building endurance and strength, developing good technique, and developing confidence at swim meets through team unity and support from coaches and other athletes. Cruisers coaches encourage training for competition and welcome cross-training and conditioning for other sports. Speed swimming practice groups are determined by age, ability, at the discretion of the coaches. Synchronized swimmers train throughout the season, choreographing and perfecting routines, as well as working on the technical aspects of the sport called "figures". In the diving program, beginner and advanced divers can attend one to three practices per week. Diving is considered to be an art as well as a sport, and all participants have an opportunity to develop a broad range of athletic, artistic, and personal qualities. Water Polo is more or less like soccer, combined with a little basketball. Unlike these sports, it is played in the water. There are three or four practices per week for each age group. Athletes have opportunities to play in a number of tournaments all over the Lower Mainland throughout the May-August season. For younger members and/or those who wish to try out a sport, synchro, diving, and water polo offer novice practice groups. The novice groups practice 1 hour each week and typically do not attend competitions. The intent of the novice groups is to provide members with a chance to become familiar with a sport and to develop some basic skills before committing to a group which practices more frequently. All Cruisers members are entitled to sign up for and participate in one or more of the aquatics sports offered through the club, however, most swimmers limit their participation to one or two sports so that they are able to attend practices regularly. There is limited space in all of our programs, with spaces being filled on a first-come first-served basis. Cruisers also offers a pre-competitive speed swimming program for younger swimmers who are not quite ready to join one of our regular practice groups. This program is called Cruiser Splash. Cruiser Splash accepts swimmers who are not yet able to swim one complete length of the pool, as long as they are able to completely submerge their head. Through a series of games and swimming drills, each participant develops fundamental swimming skills essential for speed swimming.
